Dear Platt,
I sympathize quite strongly with the principles you mention 27/6 9:30 -0400
and the social democratic party in the Netherlands (the 'Partij van de
Arbeid') probably does too. (I am not sure. I'm no member of that party and
I haven't the time to check.)
You probably don't sympathize (otherwise you wouldn't choose them).
The point of discussion will probably be less whether the described
conditions are desirable (I hope you agree to a certain extent), but whether
a/the government should guarantee/create these conditions. Probably for you
hardly any government role in creating these conditions is justified. For me
the role of government should be restricted to fairly passive facilitation
and organization of things that are valued by a large majority of the
population. The popular support for such a governmental role can better not
be organized by government itself, I think, but by non-governmental
organizations (e.g. trade unions).
I will be on vacation for the next three weeks.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
