To Erin, Marco and Platt
ERIN:
this is kind of funny because it just seems to squabble about
the definition of teology.
B values precondition A --- is teological to me but not you
evolution toward a dynamic goal---is teological to me but not to you
I am going by that "toward something" makes it teological.
Rog:
Going toward something or valueing a precondition is not teleological to me
at all. I think you are right that we are just squabbling over terminology.
I don't think whether or not the goal is defined is critical either.
ERIN:
i think it is interesting because Roger thinks Pirsig and thus teological
is wrong, Marco thinks Pirsig doesn't agree with teology,
Platt thinks Pirsig and teology are right.
ROG:
I understand why Platt thinks as he does, and other than warning him of where
(I fear) it can lead, I certainly see the value in it. He could be right.
Seriously. I don't understand how Marco can say that Pirsig rejects
Teleology, though. I thought he explicitly embraces it as defined in the
evolution chapter. Marco?
ERIN:
I just came across this statement that said evolution is at
odds with teology, to be more precise it is neutral about it.
ROG:
I agree, it is neutral. It doesn't attempt to address the issue either way.
It avoids it.
PLATT:
So I wonder
what's the purpose in believing the universe has no purpose?
ROG:
Just as direction doesn't imply a goal or purpose, the rejection of
teleological explanations doesn't eliminate the possibility of PURPOSE. I
suppose it negates the transcendental, idealistic, eternal truth, Plattonic
;^) view of purpose, but it certainly doesn't negate purpose. Purpose itself
can evolve and emerge. Not that it had to, but it did.
I wouldn't say that the universe had a purpose or goal to be creative, but I
would certainly say it IS CREATIVE.
