Dear 3WDave,

I'm still thinking about your 17/8 8:05 -0500 post. Maybe I'll reply more
extensively later.

Just in short:
- Democratically deciding to sign the Kyoto protocol doesn't imply that a
majority of the Dutch believes that human activities cause global warming.
Bush seems to be elected by a minority of US voters and an even smaller
minority of the US population. Elections are always about a lot of issues
and to some extent they are 'merely' a popularity/celebrity poll. Just one
of the other views that might induce people to support signing the Kyoto
protocol is that global warming seems probable (given the popular
understanding of greenhouse gases 'blanketing' the earth) and that science
is not able to prove that unusual weather circumstances (e.g. a lot of
cloudbursts in the Netherlands in the last weeks) are NOT due to global
warming.
- I wouldn't say that the Kyoto protocol is itself a 'pattern of
social/intellectual values'. It is AN ELEMENT IN or it EXPRESSES both social
and intellectual patterns of values.
- Homo sapiens being a biological patterns of values CAN force although
'only ... to a limited extent' (as I wrote about intellectual and social
patterns of values) inorganic patterns of values. ('Limited' from an
inorganic point of view, not threatening to the survival of homo sapiens as
a biological pattern of values, but -maybe- endangering enough social
patterns of values to erode the basis of Western culture.)
- The Kyoto protocol is not going to influence the proportion of greenhouse
to other gases in the atmosphere, not directly that is, and indirectly only
to a very limited extent and only if it is able to work with rather than
oppose existing developments on the biological and social levels.

With friendly greetings,

Wim
