I have no problem with any of what you say. Unfortunately there are some
here and Pirsig himself that seem to contradict it. Bo for instance has
claimed for years and continues to vehemently claim that there was no
intellect until post Greecian times. Pirsig in Lila's Child comments
that the social level is exclusively human with maybe a little wiggle
room for early hominoids or highly developed primates.
You, I, Wim, and others push for a much broader interpretation and range
of time that social and intellect encompass. I guess is boils down to,
"What difference does is make if the more limited or broader view is
closer to reality ?"
One big one, IMHO, in that taking the limited position on "intellect" is
that it can be seen as basically saying to over half the world's
cultures past and present, "You have not, and will not develop to the
intellectual level until you adopt a SOM (Western) type of philosophy?"
The foolishness and arrogance of this position is self evident.
To me, limiting the "social" to humans displays a similar arrogance. A
very dangerous arrogance in as much as this exclusive splitting and
elevating of humans values in the MoQ to correspond with the "subjects"
in SOM helps substain the myth that we are separate, apart, and "better
than" the lower levels. Downplaying the lower levels role in supporting
the upper levels.
But it could be I've just bought into some of that "sustainablity" B.S.
when we really all know that, "Man can live on love (of self) alone" ;-)
