Thanks for taking on Squonkstail (maybe a hint to us all) but
please, if my effort is perceived as a "refutation of Pirsig" and/or a
wish to cut him down for my own rise in fame I have done something wrong.
Sq: My position is Pirsig's position. Taking on me is the same as taking on
Pirsig, for i am totally happy with his Zen approach to Quality. I am so
happy i will leave this forum right now and for good and not look back, if it
would be best to do so.
I have asked you Bo to explain how your self styled, 'Interpretation' deals
with a Dickens, an African Griot, a Mozart, etc. but you have decided not to
answer in approaching one month.
OK, according to the MOQ the "celebrity" factor cannot be eradicated,
social value is the base for intellectual value, but the ideal of
intellectual
objectivity isn't nil and void for that reason. It is the metaphysical aspect
of
S/O-intellect that invokes the impossible either/or demand.
My admiration for Pirsig is limitless and I would have liked to start every
message with a praise, but that would have been tiresome and not in his
style. And his absence from this discussion (well he has visited through his
annotations) is for the reason that that would stop it completely. So, I take
it
that it is in Pirsig's spirit to look for weaknesses and suggest remedies,
and
the "hole" I found is what the SOL interpretation of the intellectual level
is
meant to plug. It is no "refutation" of the basic tenets of the MOQ.
Sq: There is no hole. The 'hole' 'you' 'found' is of your won contrivance.
Having convinced yourself of the hole that wasn't, you fill it with confusion
and misunderstanding. That basically sums up your position: The hole that
wasn't.
Now, there HAS been many refutations of Pirsig throughout this
group's existence, mostly concerning the very base of the MOQ, i.e: that
Pirsig is wrong about quality-value-morals as the "groundstuff" of
reality, and many "Metaphysics of This and That" have been suggested, but
somehow these assaults have not been seen as very offensive, while
my "modification" even though I most vehemently defend the basic postulate
plus the DQ/SQ divide and the static sequence is regarded heretical .....?
Sq: The issue of value as groundstuff has been dealt with by Pirsig himself
in his own works.
Your, 'Modification' is a hole that wasn't. It is not required and creates
confusion and misunderstanding were once there was clear light and beauty.
Not only this, but having set a trend for picking holes in Pirsig, the whole
forum is now awash with hole picking buffs.
Perhaps for my style and persistence, but ..well ..this your letter shook
me

cast be asunder: Think about what PIRSIG says?
If, after all you, or anyone else wishes to ask me to never contribute to
this forum again, then i shall happily comply.
Pirsig's work does not, in my view, exhibit any of the problems Bo discovers.
Naturally, once having rejected the 'hole hypothesis' i do not feel a hole
that wasn't requires filling!
But Bo's hole filling has continued for YEARS, and, if one were to gather all
the posts he has ever written upon the matter and then asked for just one
individual who finds the position compelling, i feel you would see things in
perspective?
Bo has persisted with his modifications, interpretations, hole filling and
what not for YEARS and no one, as far as i can see, gives so much as a fig?
All the while, Pirsig's own work is not receiving the thought it deserves,
nor is it being allowed to infuse people with the shear thrilling enthusiasm
that it magically generates of its own harmonious presence.
More than this, the magic Pirsig transfers like a master Zen archer; teaching
without teaching, to others who wish to learn in an abandonment of ego, is
overshadowed by doubt and personal uncertainty.
