Hi Nathan and All,

I agree with your application of "theory" with regard to Islam's harsh feelings towards the west. A theory of knowledge based upon Persig's division of everything into static and dynamic quality implies a metaphysics of quality which will explain an individual's experience upon reflection. One part of that theory IMO is that an individual instinctively experiences purpose. One aspect of this experience is that purpose pertains only to the individual. Everyone is different.

Purpose can be communicated one on one to another only by metaphor. Though there is a common experience of the social and intellectual orders known through reflection "know thyself". Every conversation does not have to re-invent the wheel. Evolving to the social and intellectual orders, story tellers become artists delineating the celebrity of leaders, and focusing attention on the reflection necessary to become more aware of the moral orders. Free speech!

Religion adopted the most dynamic stories of purpose. They created Revelation by adding the certainty of Faith to the trust in the communication of story tellers. A purpose for everyone was proposed, and revelation was sealed. I remember a Native American story teller recounting that his ancestors wondered why the Christian missionaries thought only their stories were true, and not the stories of the native's tradition.

I read a story told by Grudjieff of a brigand in Afghanistan waiting for two days in one spot without sleep to rob a traveler. The leadership and policing of such willful individuals are unknown to me. I would think they would be based on plain speech.

It is easier to speak doctrine, than to constantly examine my individual development and experience. I agree with Persig's rebellion against the Church of Reason. It is easier to teach that doctrine and memory lead to knowledge, than to take the time to structure the individual students' experience, and to insist upon their need for reflection.

On Islam's harsh feelings towards the west ... I don't think there's one single theory to explain everything. Western "take-over" of muslim countries, value rigidity, western unilateral support of Israeli terrorism (or however you want to define their actions), and you can formulate perfectly justifiable theories from every angle every hour on the hour until canaries sing your favorite oldies hits, and you still will not have quite nailed it.
