Hi John B,
One element from the conservative thread that you comment on.
You quote me saying "Fundamental to the Conservative attitude is a distrust
of ideology; more broadly, it is a distrust of new ideas, especially those
that are advanced as being ... more rational than those currently
prevailing".
And you comment: "Pretty clear to me. New, more rational, ideas are not to
be trusted. Hardly an openess to the dynamic quality to be found at the
intellectual level."
In Pirsig's terms, my point is that those ideas advanced as being more
'rational' are not necessarily better - that they are established by SOM
logic (or another ideology), rather than being of higher quality. As Pirsig
writes in ZMM, he objects to "the tendency to do what is "reasonable" even
when it isn't any good".
I think that both you and I are suspicious of an identification of
'intellectual' with the fourth level, and higher quality/dq generally,
seeing it as arid. That's what lay behind my point.
Sam
