To all,
To me this issue is about the level of discourse, not whether or not
criticism is dead. Erin seems to be bothered (as am I) about the (low)
level of discourse that has griped America since 9-11.
A: Invading Iraq is bad policy.
B: You're
anti-Amican/unpatriotic/terrorist/apologist/liberal/conservative....ad
naseum.
A policy criticism is answered with an ad hominem attack. One might
expect this in bars, pool halls or school yards, but when it happens in
journalism, major media outlets and on the floor of the US Congress it's
indicative of a serious problem.
The "good vs. evil" and "with us or against us" rhetoric is certainly
eroding an already shallow debate to mindless partisan name-calling.
Both sides are guilty of it.
