Thomas, Davor,

THOMAS:
isn't language also real?

MATT:
Sure, never have I said that it isn't.

THOMAS:
what I'm on to, is this: often, reality is separated from us

MATT:
This is what the pragmatists are repudiating and what I've been going on
and on about. Language is not a third entity mediating between us and reality.

DAVOR:
HUH? There is a us? And a reality? no, there is reality, and part
of that reality, the part that we think relates to we, is us, not?

MATT:
Well, I don't quite understand you're objection, but if its along the lines
of a Spinozist, holistic understanding of humans as simply being functions
of reality, then I don't there's anything wrong with that conception. When
we take reality to mean "universe" then obviously we are a part of reality,
not distinctively seperate from it. Sometimes it is useful to think this
way. There are times, however, when it is useful to think of ourselves as
distinct from the reality surrounding "us" i.e. the time when a fist is
being leveled at your face. If there is no distinction between that fist
and your face, then prepare to get hit.
