Hi Darrell,
I think you have a point. There was this
psychology experiment done a long time ago by
Stanley Milgram. The motivation behind understanding
Nazism.
He set up this experiment so the subject was
told he was going to be the teacher and this
other subject was going to be the student (student
was secretly in on the experiment.
They were in separate rooms while teacher had to
deliver shocks to the students for every wrong
answer. They wanted to see how far the students would go
before dissenting against authority.
The subject was even instructed that when the shocks
went up to levels start complaining about them,
complain about heart symptoms, beg to stop etc.
Everytime the teacher asked the experimenter shouldn't
we check on him or stop the experimenter would just
tell him that he would take responisibilty and it
would ruin the experiment to stop.
It was scary to see how far everyone would go before
dissenting or not dissent all.
Milgram made the point that if people are obey this
authority figure in such a low pressure situation that
to imagine the high pressure of Nazism.
People obviously have differences in how
likely to whether they would conform or dissent
but the statistics of the experiment showed
how powerful a situation can be (this situation
wasn't that serious-ruin an experiment so what).
So when I hear comments about hating Nazis I
always think about the statistics of this study and that makes me
wonder who could have really resisted the pressure of
the situation. So yeah I like the idea of
judging situations rather then people to...
but there has to be a level of taking
personal responisibity of choosing a good
situation too at least concerning yourself.
