Dear Matthew, Platt and Rick,
I don't know anything about 'the fair-use protections of the federal
copyright act' that Rick mentions 24/10 16:18 -0400 and even very little
about Dutch copyright laws. I guess however that neither prohibits me from
having and using a scanned version of 'Lila', given the fact that I have
also bought the book. Platt knows its origin, I think. It is a Word file and
very convenient to find passages and to cut quotes from and past them into
e-mails. Its size is 677 kB, so I think I could legally e-mail it to anyone
who can prove to me that he/she has already bought the book (and who has an
e-mail provider that sets no limit to e-mails lower than 677 kB). Do you
agree, Platt? I could also put the file on my website to be downloaded by
anyone who gets the exact URL from me in exchange for this proof of already
having bought the book (if necessary with a password which I regularly
change). What kind of proof do you think, Platt, would I have to ask to
prevent the publisher from suing me?
With friendly greetings,
Wim
