in a perfectly uniform universe--one containing no matter--time would
vibrate so fast that it would be timeless. it is only in a physical
universe that time occurs linearly. outside of matter it is non-linear. (i
say outside since it is a dimension in this reality but who knows where it
really is!)

Matter warps--or curves--"spacetime", causing what we experience as gravity.
