Jason, Rob, Ciona, and squad,
According to my interpretation of Pirsig's proposal Dynamic Quality is
not something that we have to meditate on, or even think about. It seems to
me that it applies to the entire inorganic universe as well as all life,
sentient or non-sentient, within it. It is the directing force that ensures
that all possibilities are noticed and tried. It works equally for people
who have never heard of Pirsig as well as those on this squad. It does not
necessarily produce "truth" for sentient beings, it produces a trend toward
"truth" which, in turn, produces a trend toward a more ethical world
society. This is the basis of Pirsig's "Many Truths" idea. that all ethics
including sentient ethics will exhibit a continual trend toward greater
value and morality. Morality does not just apply to humans, it applies to
the entire living universe. All of the physical systems including the
universe, Galaxies, Solar systems, and the Earth exhibit the properties of
living systems. It is becoming increasingly noticed that all of these
systems maintain opposition to the flow of entropy toward complete
randomness which is a property of life.
"All life is a migration of static patterns of Quality toward Dynamic
Quality," (P. 160)
"Not just life, but everything, is an ethical activity. It is nothing else"
(P. 181).
Again, if we follow Pirsig's philosophy all life, including humanity, as
well as the functioning of the inorganic universe, is inescapably embedded
in the Quality function even if most of us are not aware of it. Ken
