Re: MD Brain Structure, Life on Other Planets, and the MoQ

I have just joined this discussion group a few days ago.
I was surprised when I opened up my e-mail and had 34 messages
concerning the MoQ! I tried to read as many as my brain could take. Everyone
seems so intelligent, it's a bit intimidating. And it takes me for ever to
respond, because I can't type or spell worth a shit. Some of the e-mails I
received seemed more like novels. I tended to skip them.
However, I thought your concepts of the similarities between the structure
and evolution of the brain and Pirsig's metaphysics very insightful.
Pirsig mentions the philosophy of the Indian Upanishads which includes the
belief
tat tvam asi - "Thou art that". In their belief system the Brahman is the
creator of all things. Is the universe. The ultimate object. The Atman is your
deepest self. The ultimate subject. But they believe if you peel away either
the Brahman or the Atman like layers of an onion you reach the same point.
The Brahman is the Atman. The subject is the object.
Your brain evolution theory reminded me of this analogy, but I had never
thought of it in your unique way. Very clever, I think.
But I always have problems with "aliens" or extraterrestrials. I firmly
believe the sophist outlook that "man is the measure of all things". A
participant in all things. To me, without a human mind, there is no universe.
The universe is an invention of the human mind. It's probably a naive opinion
(most of mine are), but it doesn't seem to make room for other intelligent
life forms on other planets.
I sometimes ask my atheist or agnostic friends whether they think that people
like Moses, Jesus, Lao Tsu, or The Buddha were just kidding. Pulling a fast
one. Maybe they were just meglomaniacs who wanted to be remebered. Or that
they were just plain nuts. I kinda doubt it. I have found wisdom in their
words. I've got friends who find it easier to believe in UFO's than God. I
think it's from living in this western, scientific mythos that's at the
sourse of their beliefs. But then again, I've always been a Rams fan, so my
belief system is highly suspect too.
I enjoyed your ideas. Thanks,
Fred
