Carmen: One inherent characteristic of the human spirit has always been the
necessity to fill an spiritual vacuum. The fact is there, ignoring that 'need'
does nothing to alleviate the problem. Many may argue that is up to parents to
teach those kind of values, true. Parents, specially in our beloved USA are too
busy with a two pay check jobs. A lot of children fall through the cracks. Even
when parents choose to stay home there is still a problem. Here is what I would
propose:
Teach religion at public schools, not as a 'you must do what I say type of
thing', but as a ordinary subject. Start by not using the name 'religion', use
something else. i.e. Human values, whatever. Take a scientific approach to study
the subject. Study the origin and progression of the different religions, go back
to the Cave Man and how they started adoring Totems etc. get into the
Anthropological side of 'religion=human values'. Teach them to respect other
people's choices for their religion preferences. Also let them know that is o.k.
to Doubt, to be inquisitive, freedom to think. Here is where the main problem
would come. Most religions do not allow for free thinking, they tell you that
this is the way things are and 'just shut up and ride'. Even worse, the fact that
one so much look into other people's values is an unforgivable sin (blasphemy).
There are a lot of countries that do not have the infrastructure or maturity to
do that, but in my opinion the USA is ready.
Maybe this is a Thought that is too far ahead of this times. It is going to take
a lot more blood spill before people take a more pragmatic approach.
.....Like they say around here, south of the border.....
                    So~nar no cuesta nada.......
Translation: To dream cost you nothing....

Carmen.
