Hello everyone
I've been reading with interest the "Pirsig on human nature" string and
would like to explore a couple thoughts. Ken Clark writes of the Big Bang
theory as the origin of Quality... I would like to remind everyone that the
Big Bang is merely one theory of several that purport to explain the origins
of the universe and is by no means proven, despite the claims of many
researchers. There are at least 10 problems with the Big Bang theory which I
will not go into here unless anyone is interested. Suffice it to say that
although the Big Bang theory is socially accepted it is not fact. We could
just as easily say the Steady State theory is the beginning of Quality but
what are we saying then? Hmmm... no, I think Quality begins, and ends, with
experience, and not the theoretical origins of the universe.
Drose states that we are the culmination of evolution at this point. This is
bothersome to me although I cannot quite put a finger on why. Also, concern
for the biosphere is admirable but unnecessary. The earth is a Dynamic
organism that we have no control over whatsoever, although we form
conceptual agreements to the contrary. 65 million years ago the dinosaurs
were the culmination of evolution to that point. What does that tell us?
Like the earth, we are Dynamic organisms that we attempt to control with
reason, though that is impossible.
So what is the reason for reason? Reason is a way for us to be comfortable.
We tell ourselves that we know how the universe began... we even calculate
to the microsecond what occurred at the beginning of the universe with our
reasoning. Things are not quite so scary for us then perhaps? Reason is the
capability to form conceptual agreements with other humans and elevate
ourselves to the top of the evolutionary ladder. A grand culmination of
billions and billions of years, resulting in us! How can we not help but
swell up our chests in pride...
The universe didn't begin billions of years ago... it began when we each
became aware of it. And it will not end in billions of years as it expands
into plasma streams or collapses back on itself... it will end when each of
us as individuals die. That is the beginning and ending of Quality as we
understand it to be. That is the beginning and ending of the universe. And
to my understanding, the MOQ states the same.
Best wishes,
glove
