Hello ,
David B. serves up a plate of Sunday soul food. This passage snaps
crisply with clarity:
"The mystic does not ignore patterned reality, but sees
through it and beyond it. The mystic sees that the true underlying
Quality supports himself and the universe. He sees that the patterns are
secondary. The static patterns are "real", but not primary."
Well said. Today I was doing just that while out for a drive on
California's highway 101 in Santa Barbara County. The cars, the
scenery, the lines on the road were all very "real". Understanding
that is essential. Still, as I drove, I was looking through that
pattern to the Quality which was making the drive go smoothly.
When I drive, which is a lot, I like to picture all of the
probabilities of getting smashed out there. I visualize what will
happen if I don't execute a turn properly or if
another car veers in front of me at the wrong moment. I search the
pattern of each stretch of driving time for anomalies that could
degenerate into a bloody accident and find I can have a large positive
effect on the traffic. That may not sound like mystical experience
but it is. It's all very potent.
If that road and the idea of the physical power out there was too
real, then I think I would tighten up and not be as good a driver.
The first step for going "through" those very dangerous patterns seems
to me to be a rightful appreciation for their static quality. My
interest in what can go wrong out there brings up a more mystical
pattern in which images of pain and suffering present guidelines as
important as the signs and lines of the road. They represent a deeper
extension of those lines
Most drivers try to block that out I think. Most of the time they get
away with it but sometimes a pattern of "drive time" will collapse on
them despite the fact that they are driving properly within the lines
so-to-speak. Some natural circumstance will just occur and they
get trapped in it. I always try and look through the static pattern
to the "eye of the needle" which is not exactly placed in space and
time. Trying to explain this probably makes me sound mystical. But
there is no mystery for me in how this works.
I'll tell you a funny story about going through this "eye" out in
traffic. Once while driving on the freeway I noticed the cars were
slowing down and instinctively went left toward a lane at the center of the
road where you're not suppose to drive. That lane represented freedom
to me, extra space although I wasn't really thinking much about it.
As I was making my way over I saw a gap in the fence that would allow
me to turn around. I wasn't thinking about that either but was
attracted to it none-the-less. When the cars finally stopped they
were dead stopped. People were standing outside on the freeway. By
the time I stopped I was about a half mile past the gap in the fence
but it was still accessible to me by that center lane, so I got on it
and started to go in reverse.
Well, naturally a cop comes along on the opposite center lane and sees
me and stops. He gets ready to yell at me and in a flash, I point to
my soon-to-be-startled ex-wife riding next to me and scream in a panic,
"she's got diarrhea!". The cop glanced at her and then me and kind of shook his
head in exasperation. He left without saying a word and I was able to
go back to that gap in the fence.
Alright, I lied...and my ex-wife was miffed about being falsely
accused of having diarrhea. But I got to go have lunch while the road
was being cleared. If we're too caught up in the static patterns we
are like the rich man (rich in material patterns) who cannot make it
through the eye of the needle.
