David B and MoQers, greetings.
For the most part, movies and are anti-intellectual. Having slept
through 2001: A Space Odyssey many times (waking up only for Also Sprach
Zarathustra) and comparing the experience with reading the book, the
images imposed by Kubrick on the material lessened the impact of
Clarke's book for me. My own impressions and mental images have long
since been replaced by Kubrick's. Burgess' Clockwork Orange was
similarly hijacked by Kubrick, IMO. Movies made from various parts of
the Bible have the same numbing effect. I couldn't for the life of me
imagine ZAMM at the local Bijou. I would probably refuse to view it.
The problem is that the director's vision obscures one's own.
