Have I missed something? Where did Pirsig claim "total independance of the
layers"? Yes, they each have their own morals or laws and the higher in
general can dominate the lower, but they may do so only within limits. which
Pirsig defines in some places and hints at in others.
A real world example.
My brother adopted a boy who when he was two years old would throw tantrums
and hold his breath until he passed out. A doctor advised blowing in his mouth
to try to stop him, but if that didn't work not to worry about it because once
he passed out his (biological level) would take over. Now whether these
tantrums emanated from the social or intellectual level I do not know and it
doesn't really matter. One, or the other, or both said "I am not going to
breath?" which was wholly within those levels' right to do being higher
level(s), but the consequences of this action were that the
intellectual/social levels then abdicated control, by passing out, to the
biological level which stepped in and said "Breath"
While the MoQ can slice and dice reality into 4 SPoV and DQ with 5 discreet
moral orders, which maybe very helpful in analyizing particulars in retrospect
, it still subscribes to the Zen position that ultimately reality is the
undivisable experience of now.
Gentle is, as Gentle does.
