Roger, David, Rich, Platt, Walter and others,
I have been following the current MD threads with interest and some frustration. The
frustration arises from the wealth of material being covered, and my desire to limit the time I
spend with it. Rather than attempt to pick out bits and pieces of what has seemed to me a
very good debate about basics, I took the opportunity of several days with the flu to attempt
my own synthesis. First I extracted what I took to be significant strands in Pirsig's
metaphysics as presented in Lila, then critiqued them from my own perspective, using the
concept of the organism as a unifying factor.
This has helped me to clarify a number of things that have always troubled me about Pirsig's
presentation, assisted me to challenge those bits I don't like, and driven me to attempt (oh,
hubris) to do it better. No doubt there will be plenty of you able to make abundantly clear the
inadequacy of my attempt. I've sent this off to Diana for publication in the Forum, where it
should appear in a few days. So this is just to say that I have not been ignoring the debate,
but perhaps might be able to add to it through a more sustained critique of what I take to be
the bases for the MOQ.
