Personally, it is both. The "intellectual" understanding of
mysticism is compelling, even without the actual experience. I'm
extremely reluctant to make such claims out loud, but its easy to
sympathize with your frustration and feel obliged since I've said so
much about in the past. As you know, I think the MOQ is an intellectual
description of mysticism. But you're not asking for that, you're asking
about mystical experience. Yes, I've been there too. I'll confess that
it was not by way of meditation or long years of monk-hood. I have eaten
certain controlled substances in the past. Hopefully, it's something I
can do once a year for the rest of my life. I think its WRONG not to do
it. I've never had a visual hallucination, but I've "seen" things. Its
very hard to talk about. Once I "saw" myself and the whole earth evolve
simultaneously. Once the other saw light around me. (dharmakaya?) Once I
saw the ghosts of ancient native Americans and shared a meal with them.
But all they all had one thing in common. Each time I was profoundly
amazed. The world becomes wonderful in the truest sense of the word. I'm
getting all choked up just thinking about it. Its wrong not to do it. Go
there.
