RISKY WELCOMES JC AND ADDS TO DAVID'S GRIPE

Welcome fellow metaphysician JC! Scroll through the archives available in
the forum and you can find thousands of threads. If you don't like what you
read, just wait a week or two.... l the only thing sure about the MD is that
it always changes.

DLT WROTE:
Here are the patterns of value we need to morally adjudicate.
1. The cards are stacked against him,
2. He refused to "play the game"
3. Wrote two books that were published, promoted, and can be read as "novels"
4. He defends his work, in part, as original, serious, philosophy.
But the kicker is this approach avoids the need to accredit any sources. After
all it's only FICTION!
The criteria we would like it to meet is "If everybody did this would the
world be a better place."

RISKY RESPONDS:
You know I've thought about this too. I hate to Pirsig-bash, but sometimes
it seems that he wrote these books to be impenetrable to attack. Not only
does he not reference what seems to be the sources of his
metaphilosyphysics?, but his style of writing allows him to disagree with
himself and avoid any firm stance. Note how Phaedrus does not have to even
agree with the Narrator, and both evolve and change over time. As an
example, there is the whole Quality/Tao tangent. He suckers us into
realizing that they are the same, but then later dismisses it as something
that he isn't sure one way or another on.

He is quite a rhetoritician.

On the other hand, straight metaphysical philosophy would so unMOQ....don't
you think? (I think Pirsig already answered JC's koan with both novels, aye?)

PS -- Come back Struan! (he always does)
