David,
You are as slippery as an eel. You contend that dropping the bomb was
immoral according to the MoQ and then you don't want to discuss the
circumstances surrounding the action. I take it that you are contending
that there is NO circumstance which would justify dropping the bomb on
Japan. I think you are entirely wrong in this idea. This is not what the
MoQ holds at all. Any moral judgement based on the MoQ must take into
consideration all of the circumstances surrounding that judgement.
Pirsig's statement concerning the matter-"In general, given a choice of
two courses to follow and all other things being equal. that choice which
is more dynamic, that is, at a higher level of evolution is more moral."
He discusses the matter more fully in Chap 8 P 159-160.
In this case the -"all other things being equal" knocks your position
into a cocked hat. I think you are reading the book with your mind already
made up.
With regard to your idea that all we had to do was give a demonstration
to make the Japanese give up and make the Russians back off, maybe you
noticed that I said that the Russians entered the Asian war three days
after the first bomb was dropped, doesn't sound like they were too worried.
I am tired so I am going to quit for now.
I would like to say that I do enjoy your posts. The depth of the thread
of hubris running through your posts of the last few days-particularly the
one of 11/6 is breathtaking. Ken
