David, friends,
I'm fascinated with the Metaphysics of Quality because it makes these
conflict so clear. For instance...
Performing Social Good: Of course it is more moral to help others in
society more unfortunate than ourselves. That is completely understood on
the level of social values. A society that does not value it's members is
not going to last very long!
But right here and right now we are dealing with the intellectual level.
We are looking for the solutions - not just to an individual's suffering
within a social system - but the solution to the problems of a social
system that creates so much suffering in the first place. I think the
fishing analogy is a very apt metaphor. Teach a man to fish (intellectual
good) or give him a fish (social g good) Both are very important in their
appropriate sphere. But lets not get them confused. There is something
of a moral priority for the intellects of the world to stick to the
intellectual, and not get lost in infinitely recurring social loops. For
the poor ye have with you always.
David, I agree completely. When the basic morality of humans is forced by
laws of society, then we have the nightmare beast amongst us. My assertion
is that with the power of corporately controlled media, we've already got a
form of the beast and it's beginning to look like the democratic govt. is
the only possible way to tame the beast. Is this analysis accurate?
