Regarding the FAQ-
Since I just joined, I won't presume to start suggesting
FAQ questions or answers, but I think I can be some help
in pointing out the kinds of questions that might make a
good FAQ. (Especially since I'm one of the newer ones)
When I originally asked about the FAQ, I was hoping to
keep myself from annoying list members with "stupid"
questions. So IMHO, good FAQ questions are the "most obvious"
or "recurring" questions.
I could try to help the FAQ out by asking every question I
could possibly think of, but instead maybe I should just
catergorize my questions and let everyone else take it or
leave it.
* Questions about the list:
-What are the current rules of list ettiquete? Here
is the chance to mention rules about long .sigs,
follow-ups, etc.
-How to join/leave the list, administrata, etc
* Questions about the discussion:
-What is this discussion about? (On a basic level)
-What kinds of topics are not appropriate?
* Questions about topics:
-A FAQ doesn't have to be a definitive answer. You
can point out long-running feuds or describe topics
that people "agree to disagree" about and save the
pain of newbies unwantedly throwing more fuel on the
fire. Ex: FAQ: Which is the better book- ZMM or Lila?
Ans: There are two camps of thought on this. ZMM people
like their book for this reason, Lila people like their
book for this reason. We've stopped arguing about it.
(Just a ficticious example.)
* Questions about real life/the books themselves:
-What is Pirsig doing now? What are the sales of the two
books? What else has he done? How much of Lila is auto-
biographical? What is the public reaction to these books?
What to other philosophers think of his work? Etc etc etc.
Hope this helps-
-Steve
ObMOQ- The FAQ will be our static pattern of discussion, the list
our dynamic one.
