THE IMP ROGER CONTINUES FOR A WHILE THEN COMES TO HIS SENSES
KENNETH:
People with bad ideas are not bad people !
ROG:
Didn't mean to imply they were. I was just askin'. Oh, by the way, are
people with conservative ideas 'conservatives'? Are people with smart ideas
'smart'? I'm just wonderin'.....
KENNETH:
Are people with genes- defects bad people ?
ROGER:
I'm not sure, but rumor has it they make lousy dance partners....
KENNETH:
Can we treat people with genes- defects like dirt ?
ROGER:
I guess we could, but then we wouldn't be able to test our dance theory.
KENNETH:
Will we ever !?
Presumably we will, due to the fact that than the knowledge how memes
work will have been spread. Nowadays we do the same thing with genes,
employers, assurance- companies want to know if you will have diseases
and at which age you will die from cancer.
ROGER:
Is the act of assigning a premium based upon expected loss results your
definition of "treating people like dirt?"
KENNETH:
We can 't deny that fact.
That is why, the ethical implications of memetics have yet to be solved,
and the issue of free will/ determinism will be in the middle of the debate.
In a sense, when the technologies are available they will ask you to do
something about your genetic and memetic defects.
In my opinion, if you don 't believe that, you are naive...sorry.
ROGER:
No need to apologize, as we have yet to ascertain if I believe that or not.
And while we are on the topic, are people with memetic defects "defective
people"?
KENNETH:
But on one point we can conjure, and that is that we all have an illusion
of free will. There is nothing wrong with that view, only when it comes to
the ethical implications, that is to convert scientific findings into laws,
rules, regulations etc you gonna ran into trouble.
ROGER:
What are you suggesting we set rules on? I'm just askin'!
KENNETH:
Common sense is not always " common sense ".
ROGER:
But "no' really does mean 'no'.
I am just being silly now, so forgive me. I actually agree with most of what
you have written. (Except for the OJ stuff). My point was always that free
will and determinism are a platypus of SOM thinking. Your arguments on the
dangers of genetic and memetic testing and such are serious concerns and
deserve serious discussion.
Forgive me, for I have punned,
Roger
