Struan:

A couple of points in response to your latest Pirsig put down:

STRUAN:
. . . we all do have a built in quality detector . . . that defines every
action we take and . . . our very being.

Good. I assume the “we” in your sentence refers to atoms as well
as people. If not, you’ve missed Pirsig’s point in saying “Quality
equals reality.”

STRUAN:
It is asking whether value is EQUIVALENT to reality. . . . Most
people would agree that a horse is real and yet it would be
fallacious to conclude from this that a horse EQUALS reality.

A false analogy. Pirsig’s metaphysics says that reality is
equivalent to patterns of value. You, me and horses are examples
of such patterns.

STRUAN:
I submit that nothing but the platitudinously obvious has been
forwarded, albeit confused by an alleged conflation of the stock
market, money and mechanism which drives the stock market, a
confusion nobody who thinks about it will make.

It’s far from platitudinously obvious to most people how money
and the stock market measure social quality since most people
never heard of “social quality” and haven’t the slightest idea how it
fits into a hierarchy of values as explained in the MOQ. It would
seem the meaning of social quality as presented in the MOQ also
escapes you.

STRUAN:
The objections I raised in my initial posting to the squad stand to
this day and, until answered properly, making the lifting of the moq
to a practical ethical system impossible.

Impossible? No more so than the ethical system championed by
your cult-like heroine Iris Murdoch who during World War II was an
active member of the Communist party. (Two can play the game of
ad hominem attacks such as your comparison of Pirsig to
“theologians, rogues, despots, cult leaders and priests.”) As to
whether your objections still stand, I doubt it—except in your own
mind.
