Hello everyone
I just read a very interesting article which seems related to our
discussion of how memes fit into the MOQ. You may see it here:

(If the link doesn't work just go to http://www.newscientist.com and
click on "chart topper".)
Researchers have observed what they term a "compelling" change in whale
songs and often times we can see more clearly in other species our own
cognition traits which have been covered over in complexity. Is a whale
song to be considered a meme? If so, how are animal memes different than
human memes? Is there a fundamental difference? Or do they share
historical evolutionary processes, as the MOQ would seem to claim?
I would suggest the whale song (our interpretation of) is in response to
preconditioned values the whales are experiencing in the context of
being whales. They like the new song and discover themselves singing
along much in the same way we humans do. The intellect demands a reason
for the song yet Dynamic Quality is beyond reason and all life shares in
"it". There is no reason. It's like trying to figure out what the
pursuit of happiness means. There is no set answer. The whale song is
the whales response to Dynamic Quality. They are compelled by "it" just
as we are.
So my conclusion in light of the MOQ is we cannot consider memes as
independent entities. Memes are like cogs in an endless spiraling wheel
of Quality; fleeting patterns of value that arise from nowhere, flourish
while they may then disappear like the frost on the grass in the early
morning sunshine, yet we are compelled by them (the traces of DQ) and
feel a compulsion to make the patterns of value real. Still, in no way
should patterns of value be looked at as merely an illusion either.
Reality is composed of patterns of values, and that's all there is,
except for undefined Dynamic Quality.
I still sense discordance between the MOQ and memetic theory in general
and welcome any comments anyone might have.
Thanks for reading.
Dan
