Sticks and stones may break my bones, but '/' will never hurt me.
Peter, thanks for the info on the brain front, and the honesty in not
volunteering for surgery. Probably hitting an engine with a sledge hammer
still works in some cases (a quick tap to the side does my TV). That
doesn't help you know how the engine works (and I've yet to set up as a TV
repair man).
Re best theory so far: well, from my point of veiw, other 'theories' are
better ones, and are better supported. There's a kind of "too rule is my
right" imperialism about the assumption that certain accounts of mind/brain
are the best supported merely because they come from scientists.
Re "no-one at this stage proposes that 'brain-stuff' explains mind, nor even
that a full explanation will ever be available; that's tantamount to saying
we will, in the foreseeable future be able to describe (i.e. predict the
behaviour of) 'everything'." - thank goodness for that. Actually I think
that the religion of science, for alot of people, is precisely that: that we
will one day be able to predict everything. Glad to learn of your sanity
though!
