Elephant, you write:

>You can't go about attributing the invention of the
question 'What is good?' to particular individuals
(even if they are called 'Plato'). That would be
silly.

That would be silly, indeed, but that’s neither what I
asked for nor what I was given in response. The
attribution I asked for (and received gratefully --
had I looked a little harder, I could have found it
myself) was for a particular *text*: viz, the
italicized three lines following the Author’s Note
(which, curiously, you deny is an epigraph).

To belabor the point: I asked not about the general
question "What is good?" but about the specific text:

What is good, Phaedrus,
And what is not good –
Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?

>I don't know which bits of Plato's work Pirsig might
have been thinking
of, except (I hope) all of them, but Marco may be on
to something when he
draws our attention to Plato's thinking about the Good
in Art.

He’s not just "on to something." He provided what I
asked for, exactly.

>p.s. so many people joining and rejoining this list
at the moment that
I can't keep track! Hello hello hello! ("what's all
this then?")

Hello, hi, greetings! Glad to be here.

Regards,
Mark
