Question 1 : In ZAMM and Lila, what does he mean by an argument where one
pulls one's
self by the bootstraps?
First off, have you ever tried to pull yourself up by the bootstraps? It's
pretty hard, but it can be useful. At least in argumentation. It's like
proving a conclusion with the conclusion. In more pricise terms I went to
a book on the philosophy of science (specifically Confirmation Theory):
The "Bootstrap" Account of Confirmation
....
(iii) the theory may include the very hypothesis under consideration
("bootstrap clause").
It goes on and on about how it works, but that's the gist.
