Hi John, Gerhard, Squonk:
First, thanks for your positive responses to my thesis explaining
consciousness through the eyes of the MOQ. I agree with Squonk's
one line summary of the underlying process:
DQ creates patterns which respond to DQ.
Of great interest is Gerhard's penetration into the hiearchy of the biological
pattern--nerve cells and synapses-- that draws in DQ from the
environment. The "me" or subconscious aspect represents stable
patterns produced from previous DQ experiences while the "I"
represents an attribute of the pattern that is capable of responding to
new DQ auras.
>From John I learned I have a lot of reading to do although I'm not quite
sure how a scientific, or pseudo-scientific, explanation of
consciousness can affect an MOQ explanation. If we've learned one
thing from this new metaphysics it is that many of the premises of
science (such as reductionism) are way off base.
Finally I'd like to comment on John's summary of my summary:
> Platt: Summary: Consciousness emerges from an organic pattern of nerve
> cells and synapses whose function is to draw in Dynamic Quality from
> the environment to create inner experience that serves the value needs
> of the organism.

You seem to say "consciousness is a given" which is like saying "digestion is a
given" or "breathing is a given." Not very explanatory is it? Your
summary casts consciousness as a fundamental mystery without a
solution, thus beyond science. Further, where is any reference to the
MOQ? Are you implying that any attempt to explain consciouness in
terms of the MOQ is futile?
Thanks again all. I hope to hear from others as well.
Platt
