William,
As I write this I think I am having a similar experience to Pirsig when
confronted by Rigel. It's not that there isn't a point of divirgence or that
we couldn't explore our interpretations of reality but that the answer are
buried way up the chain of reasoning. Lately in reading some of the posts
to this group I really wonder if i'm in the right group and I wonder if
Pirsig would feel the same. (Am I just whinning? Damn, I hate whinners.)
Shall we try to back up then?
Is Experience is the most important guide to forming philosophies? (Or in
MoQ terms; Static intellectual patterns of value arise out of our
experiences with the three other static patterns and Dynamic Quality). Then
as experience differs, philosophies should too. If this is true then
perhaps what we are really discussing is our differing experiences of
reality. (I think that the story of the blind men and the elephant is
appropriate to recall at this point.) The MoQ goes further and claims that
the MoQ may be used to disect the commonality of Experience and interpret
differing experiences from a point of view that is more inclusive and make
predictions from this superior view of commonality. If you follow this line
of reasoning, then perhaps were our situations reversed, might each of us
might rightly hold the opposite opinions? I must accept that you are
generating the best static pattern intellectual you can, based on your
experience and interpretations of reality, as you must accept the same of
me. If we both agree with this then we come to discussing interpretations
of the past and why we draw the inferences we do. If we do not agree with
this then what basis is there for communication?
Sincerely,
Glen
P.S. Hopefully no offense is given for painting you as Rigel in the opening
statement.
