Altaf,

Hope you do find a way into the great outdoors! But may I say that
it sounds as if meditation is your quality way to find the great
outdoors in you. One of my teachers, Paul Rezendes, said that you
don't have to go outside to get back to nature--it is in each of
us all the time.

Hope you don't think I was being cynical of people who sit and hum
"aum..." I meant no disrespect whatsoever. Another of my teachers,
Angeles Arrien, said there are four types of meditation: lying,
sitting, standing and walking--each with its own rewards and
purposes. I practice each of them, but that "monkey mind" of mine
is still a bit of a nuisance! :))

Perhaps my monkey mind would be silent if I learned to have no
purpose in meditation?

Your comment about putting the pencil down reminds me of a film in
which Sean Connery portrays Forester, a famous writer, who is
mentoring a young man with a great deal of talent. A moment of
great quality occurs when he tells the young man to sit down at
the typewriter and type. The boy resists, because he does not know
what to type. But Forester again commands him to type. Eventually
he does start typing, and after many faltering starts and stops,
he finds something inside himself to type and charges forward with
passion and purpose. Then Forester gives us the metaphysics of
that quality moment by saying, "You write with your heart, and
re-write with your head..."

Forester's comment reminds me of what is discussed quite often on
this list in regards to static and dynamic quality. Everyone
watching the movie "experienced" the quality in that moment
between Forester and the boy--we didn't "need" the explanation.
But I must also say that I like the words, too--it is another of
those quotes which I save in my little book that are not the
quality itself, but the arrow that points toward it. John Beasely,
who posts here occasionally, calls it pointing to the moon. Nice
metaphor...

Best regards to all,

Billy Dean

Billy, Oisin :

It was definitely very interesting reading about your quality
experiences, especially for someone like me, living in a crowded
part of Asia with a very little chance to step outdoors. However
out here we see quality in the minds and hearts of people, the
smiles on their faces and in conversations with them.

In a crowded city with very little space, one has to reach deep
within to find quality in things that one does and in life in
general. People here have the practice of meditating, which
involves closing ones eyes and making ones mind blank, sometimes
by the repetition of a single sound "aum". This clears the mind
and helps one focus on things.
It is surprising how one can find the answer to many issues by
making ones mind blank for a period of time.
Sometimes the solution arrives by "getting out of yourself" and
looking at the problem in a an objective and detached manner.
I study architecture, and understand what Billy shares with fellow
artists, poets and sculptors. Sometimes I find the solution to a
design problem by putting my pencil down and staring at the
drawing board for hours on end.
All the same I still wait for the time when I can step outdoors
and have the same experience as you guys have had.

Thanks for sharing this. -Altaf.
