MD An Attack on Freedom

Greetings to All

I hope all members of this and the MF discussion group are safe and well and that
their families and loved ones are also safe and well after the recent outrageous
events and ensuing carnage. My most fervent hope now is that the response to
these events will not be more of the same as this would be as great a tragedy -
possibly greater.

It's been said a number of times that this was an attack on freedom and it may be
that this turns out to be the case. What I fear the most is that the response will be
to reduce all our freedoms in the name of security and to prevent further outrages.
If this is the case then the perpetrators - whoever they are - will have won.
One of the downsides of democracy and freedom is that every now and again you
take a hammering precisely because of these values. Surely this is one of the
most important lessons that the MoQ has to offer. Safe and secure societies share
much in common with repressed societies in that they are static, stagnant and
effectively dead. They are unwilling or unable to move towards DQ and freedom.
The biological response of violence and repression will not solve anything.
Intellect guiding society must be the way forward.

To re-iterate Platt's quote of Pirsig;

>From LILA, Chaper 24: "Freedom of speech; freedom of assembly, of
travel; trial by jury; habeas corpus; government by consent--these
'human rights' are all intellect vs. society issues. According to the
Metaphysics of Quality these 'human rights' have not just a sentimental
basis, but a rational metaphysical basis. They are essential to the
evolution of a higher level of life from a lower level of life. They are for
real."

Let's hope the lower lifeforms don't try and remove these essential requirements.
