Hi Mark.
I would not write off America.
I am not in the business of writing off anyone.
It should be remembered that advances in technologies usually have an
international feel to them; very often the same thing is being pursued at the
same time in different areas of the world?
Rocketry was well shaped by Nazi scientists, who were then utilised by the
early US space administration in order to get to the Moon, etc.
The US is not the be all and end all of the world.
It is a confederation of 52 different countries, each with an individual
flavour.

The US is childlike in the sense of a pod of spoiled brats.

 Squonk,

It has been said that America is the first great world empire to go from
 it's period of
adolescence to its decline without an intervening period of maturity.

There is some truth in this statement. To me America will always have a
 child like quality.

Without American 'culture' Squonk we wouldn't be conversing.

There would be no Internet. Man would not have walked on the moon. In itself
you might say 'big deal what's moon rock ever done for me?' Well the
resulting leaps in technology lead to the Information age and provided us
with weather satellites which save many thousands of people every month.

'America' can brassy and arrogant and very very ignorant. Its back to the
'Indian' thing. Their cultural reality can be very grating to foreigners but
then that's no less true than many of the negative things that have been
said about the English, the British, the Europeans, The Indians...

Any nation that is partly founded on the pursuit of happiness is going to
have problems controlling degeneration. However, writing off the whole deal
 sounds like Richard Rigel talking.
