MD Response from rural USA

Hello, all.

I watch your letters go by, and wish for the time to catch the conversation, but
instead, I'll just say, thanks for the insights.

I want to let you know that Rasheed's friend Tanim's letter (MD I am an
American, Sat, 15 Sep 2001) has turned out to be the best counter I've got to
use against indiscriminate "flag-waving," which many people assume is their duty
to do at a time like this. I just carry it around with me, and so does my
husband. It brings people up short. Quickly. Then the tone of the conversation
changes to normal, humane reactions.

I really believe that, given the chance, Americans will realize that our
self-image as knowledge-vendors, peace-makers, and citizens of the world is
more meaningful, and more useful, than the 50-year-out-of-date
military/patriotic reactions that kicked in.

I hope that the US government's insistance that this will be a "long battle"
mean there's a chance for this.

pax,
maggie
