I think the point John B. was making is that you can't
just "walk along the beach" and become mystically
transformed. You need to work at overcoming the static
to see the dynamic, to achieve mystical
transformation.

You don't understand it correctly. It is possible BUT
you need to work at it with the MOQ (pirsig), overcome
it (nietzsche), deconstruct it (Derrida), meditate on
it (various religions). I think John B. is just
reacting against this idea that "beauty in and of
itself" will "save" us. Humans have to work at it and
Pirsig's way of working at it is the MOQ. He thinks
viewing of the world through the MOQ is a "better" way
and opens up the possibility of dissolving this
boundary that we have with "beauty." But you gotta
work the MOQ.
