Trip,
>The true test of a government and an economic system
>is the quality of life of its citizens
>and we have replaced that with economic growth.
>From Pirsig's point of view, I think you need to be
careful with your terms. For Pirsig society is
secondary to intellect. The goal of society is to keep
the biological level in check. The intellect
"supports" the society level in this mission.
According to Pirsig, I think the true test of a
society is its ability to keep the biology level in
check. I guess you can call that "quality of life" but
you are mixing terms then. Pirsig would use
"controlling the biology level" instead of preserving
"quality of life." I guess I'm just quibbling with
terms but this is the Pirsig list and "quality" is a
loaded term that needs to be used correctly (at least
on this list). If you don't talk in terms of his
levels you miss the point of the MOQ and his book
LILA.
As far as Quality of life, I think Pirsig is an
individualist. Dynamic Quality is a personal
experience and as such a government should stay out of
the way of that. Democracy does that, allows for that.
Society should "support" the intellect in it's quest
for DQ.
