Got it. Yes, I agree -- Americans are unusually oriented toward
self-improvement and pretty good as self-criticism. I do worry about our
educational qualtiies, though, and fear that they do not effectively support
that thirst via helping people dedevelop their knowledge and reasoning
abilities. For example, though Europeans don't seem to have that drive for
self-improvement (I know, this is a big generalization, and I apologize in
advance to our European friends whose presence here and in other comparable
fora is proof enough of their exception to my generalization), they do
generally seem to have a greater ability in philosophy and political
reasoning than do Americans (parallel apologies to Americans for this
generalization). I just returned to the US from France and was again struck
by this distinction.
