Greetings,

Yes but, Squonk, I did not say that quality is not of interest and
therefore your posting has no bearing whatsoever upon what I actually
wrote. Once again, I thoroughly agree that value is fundamental to what
we do.

Rick, I agree entirely. Pirsig invented SOM for a good literary reason
and we should all see it for what it is. Those who think it is a
metaphysical position held by anyone are fooling themselves.

Sam. Yes Pirsig is an Idealist in the older broader definition of
Idealism that I forwarded. In the same encyclopaedia ('Concise Routledge
Encyclopaedia of Philosophy' - London - 2000 - pg 379) 'modern' Idealism
is defined as (please check the wording yourself as I do not have the
book in front of me) - 'a philosophy which takes mind as in some sense
creating the physical world even if it postulates some further more
basic reality behind the mental and physical.' - I would suspect that
you could construct a good argument to show how Pirsig also fits into
this definition if you really wanted to. Man being the measure of all
things with dq as the more basic reality, etc. Most here will
immediately retort that Idealism claims mind to be the most basic
reality and they will not want to look past that simplistic definition,
so I do not see any future in trying to place Pirsig in the Idealist
camp. You will simply be written off as an SOM'ite, which for moqers is
the intellectual equivalent of telling you to sod off.
