Meantime, anyone got any suggestions for a definition of information?
MARCO (excerpts)
Information =to Shape. It is the action to mould a concept/idea/meme(?)
using data as raw material.
Within the subjective realm of SOM (more or less the social+intellectual
levels of MOQ, according to Pirsig's SODAV paper) creating information from
data is like creating life from matter within the objective realm of SOM. In
both cases, it is an anti-entropic activity.
ROG:
Allow me to ramble along the lines started by Marco and see where it takes us.
INFORMATION is a measure of the ability to influence reality. In its most
basic form, it is reality's capacity to resist entropy -- at least locally.
(Atoms, molecules, galaxies, stars, planets, etc)
Living things are advanced anti-entropic structures EMBODYING INFORMATION.
Their form, function and pattern are information specifically focusing upon
the continuance of information.
Natural selection is a self-generating search algorithm for novel patterns of
information-embodiment (ie life) that leads to new experiences, capabilities,
versatilities, anticipations, emotions and thoughts.
Society is information on how individuals can interact to preserve and create
more information.
The scientific method is a social process of information on how to best
create more information -- more ability to influence reality.
Hmmmm... I don't know. Thoughts?
