Probably not my place to butt into your post addressed to Roger but I
can't help but remark that your position is based on two questionable,
unsupported assumptions. 1) society today is global society, and
2)social status determines one's happiness.

Regarding assumption 2) I refer you to an study reported in Scientific
American, May 1996, that found that happiness appeared constant
across many different sectors of the world's population and that
happiness does not depend significantly on external circumstances.
Particularly relevant to your assumption, the study found that wealth is
a poor predictor of happiness.

As for society being global, you will have a hard time convincing the
Muslims and Chinese (and many Europeans) of that.

I look forward to Roger's response to your challenging post and will
hereafter sit on the sidelines unless invited to participate.
