(Sidenote to Rick-- I liked your pre/post response about time and space, and
it's not England, Ohio)
Raymond: WHAT YOU MENTIONED ABOUT DOGMA IS IMPORTANT,
>AND I'M CATCHING MYSELF FALLING INTO THAT TRAP
>CONTINUOUSLY. I AM A LITTLE WORRIED ABOUT ONE THING;
>THERE'S A FINE LINE BETWEEN LETTING MYTHS TEACH YOU
>AND LETTING MYTHS CONTROL YOU. I THINK ITS IMPORTANT
>TO DISCOVER WHERE THOSE BOUNDARIES LIE, BUT I HAVE NO
>IDEAS AS TO HOW THIS SHOULD BE DONE. BUT IN THE
>MEANTIME, I'LL AVOID THE CRUSADES...!

ERIN: My nature is to be idealistic too so the dogma trap is something I am
very familiar with. Embracing the postmodern movement has loosened by grip on
reality but paradoxically clears my head so I fall in less and less traps. I
try to limit myself to 2-3 traps a day. This approach may or may not work
for you too. As Ani Difranco says "take what you can use and move on"
So as you find the approach that seems to work for you go for it.
Raymond: >YEP, I AGREE. IT'S JUST A LITTLE HARD TO GET USED TO
>THE IDEA THAT WHILE WE ARE CONSTANTLY CREATING MYTHS
>TO ENHANCE AND ENRICH OUR LIVES, THIS IS A
>NEVER-ENDING PROCESS. THE MOMENT WE STOP CHANGING AND
>CREATING THEM, THEY BECOME DOGMA.
>
ERIN: Yes it is hard to accept and even when I think I have accepted it I find
myself looking for "THE myth" again and have to kick my own ass.
Getrude Stein asked on her deathbed "what's the answer" and her friend said
she didn't know and so she asked "then what's the question?"
