Hi Bo,Rick, all
I just wanted to ask you about this claim also. I think I agree with you but
there is this little technicality that I am trying to work out.
In reading this claim what comes to mind is research on attachment theory,
specifically Bowlby's research with rhesus monkeys. There is a lot of evidence
that attachment style as an infant is predictive of adult attachment style
(there are 4-5 of them).
Bowlby did a monkey study to look at attachment in animals. He had these wire
mokeys to be the "mom" to see who the monkey would be attached to. One had a
bottle and the other was wrapped in a towel. He did this to see if the
mother-infant attachment was based specifically because of something like
breastfeeding. It turns out the monkeys would be attacheed to the wire monkey
with a towel and sit on this and lean over and drink the bottle on the other
monkey. So attachment was more than just providing nourishment--whatever
comfort that towel gave.
I think I have always considered attachment to be social but after reading
your claim makes me wonder about that.. it was just a bunch of wire and a
towel.
(Also Lorenz showed with the imprinting process to objects)
So I think I agree with you if you are defining love as attachment? This is
new to me so I am not sure if i am out of line in reducing love to this?
I don't think I will be able to read another hallmark card the same way again
Erin
