Erin - I always understood the 'culture bearer' expression to mean that a
book was written which carried the culture forward in some way. I think of
it as analogous to the brujo in Lila - the culture is wanting or needing to
move in one direction, but lacks a piece of the jigsaw that will allow it to
do so. The book or person that supplies the missing piece is the culture
bearer - the culture moves forward on the back of the book. Does that help?
