I'm pulling for #1. I would think that one of the
most important factors of intellectual Quality is
honesty; this isn't trying to go into the rights and
wrongs of morality, it just seems like any
intellectual progress need the facts, not
interpretations of the facts.
Paper #1 may not make any sense, but it allows the
reader to note the absurdity of the quote, and
therefore take steps to not only understand the
meaning of the mistake, but also look for the meaning
(and significance) of the intended remark.
#2 just paints over the cracks and calls it good.
Sounds to me like a mother changing the ending of
Little Red Riding Hood in order to fit a different
meaning into the story. I could be way off, though...
