First, you confuse DQ with Quality. It's a common
mistake or mis-sentiment on this list for people to be
enamored of DQ. I think DQ is so novel for some people
that they "latch" onto it. Quality = DQ + sq, with an
"equal" emphasis on both. DQ is capitalized because it
is beyond being talked about, another reason why
people confuse DQ with Quality. Pirsig could have used
quotes like "dq" instead I think. DQ is individual and
not collective. Pirsig gets beyond solipsism by
insisting on equal rational application of sq. There
are social norms (sq) and most of them should be
followed EXCEPT for the trump card DQ. Everyone's
trump card is different, so everyone for the most part
will violate the rules in a different sort of way. DQ
is mystic I think but remember Quality is half sq so
Pirsig is NOT a mystic. The best sort of person for
Pirsig is one who balances DQ and sq. BUT even the
Lila Blewitt's of the world should be tolerated
because DQ is the trump card in the sq game. At least
Lila commits to her DQ.
Life is a meaning game, as Ernest Becker might say.
And DQ is the sine qua non of the play. But sq gives
it the frame and allows the fun to begin.
