Dear Platt,
Just a short note.
I'm not aware of ever having 'stressed the value of education and
training to attain spiritual understanding'. I have always seen
that as a (minor) point of disagreement with John B.. Minor also
because John expresses enough doubts about his Diamond Essence
quest to sympathize with him. If my memory is lacking, please
correct me.
Focussing on experiencing 'now' and not striving after
'enlightenment' are important lessons I have have been
(gradually) learning too in my life. I'd add the importance of a
different sense of 'self', or letting go of previous focuses of
identification.
Following a guru would not square to my identification with
Quakerism, which claims that religious experience is available
for everyone without mediation by Holy Books, priests or other
hireling ministers. On the other hand focusing on a guru can be a
temporary means to let go of a previous focus of identification.
My personal truth is expressed in something I wrote some 5 years
ago:
GENESIS 3
'I' is a bundle of other people's quotes,
a set of memories, cravings and hopes.
I am connected, one with all that lives and prospers.
'I' seeks status, seeks to contact, to impress.
Impression leads to fear, opposition, repels.
'I' becomes who I am, always as ever.
'I' versus I.
I contain 'I'.
'I' is a wave, whipped up by the wind,
a wave of craving to be more than I am.
I am the sea, an ocean of love.
I receive what streams back, what returns to its source.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
