Hi Marco and DMB,
Marco: My post was just to investigate what Pirsig says about the 4th-on3rd
"triumph". Let's see your objections on the other "conflicts" [that is by
the way a term, as well as triumph, I don't like very much. Roger has
explained many times that it would be a good advancement of the MOQ to
consider the relation between the levels as a "game". Anyway this is a minor
point now].
DMB:>Again, nice work. In my book you're batting 1000, but on one point I
think
>you failed to get a hit. You didn't stike out, but didn't get a hit either.
>You walked because none of the pitches went over the plate. Or something
>like that...............
While I appreciate you attempts to carefully qualify this 4th moral
>principle by trying to make a distinction between individuality and
>individualism, I think it still doesn't work very well. ..
>My point. Painting the 4th moral principle as a contest between the one and
the many only leads to confusion. That's just not what its about. How about
this instead...
ERIN: It was funny that you used a baseball metaphor because I wanted to write
something to Marco about baseball to use as a metaphor for how the individual
and collective work together. When I read Marco's email I thought he was
saying that we shouldn't think of it of as a "contest" or "triumphing" and
alluded to idea of a game so I was kind of confused why you said that. (He
also uses the birth metaphor in previous posts that avoids the idea of
"contest")
Anyways what I wanted to write about baseball. There is this site that I
think is really creative. It is the cosmic baseball association website.
"The CBA is a baseball league of the imagination. Our focus is more poetic
than athletic. Beginning with the notion that the game of baseball is really
a metaphor for the life of the mind. CBA expresses itself with the desire for
love of individual and collective creation."
It's really interesting site "cosmicbaseball.com"
When you look at the teams you see that this quadrature is really encompassing
how all levels work together. Just look at all the different teams and their
members it's interesting.
"Cosmic Baseball Teams are organized into different leagues each season.
Baseball, like life for humans, is a sport about individuals organized into
collectives. The collectives that function well together generally succeed.
Disorganized collectives usually end up in the cellar, but not always."
